Leaks on the private underground supply

Between the meter and the villa there can be tens of metres of buried pipe under driveways, terraces and gardens. A leak there may never show indoors.

Whose pipe is it?

Usually private, enquire here

  • The buried pipe after your meter, running to the house
  • Branches to outbuildings, guest houses, irrigation manifolds or pool rooms
  • Pipework inside your plot boundary that you or your community maintain

Utility side, contact the supplier

  • The public main and the connection up to the meter
  • The meter itself and its seals
  • Anything in the public road or pavement

What may point to a buried leak

  • 01The meter turns with all indoor and outdoor use closed
  • 02A persistently green or soft patch of garden in a dry spell
  • 03Settlement, cracking or damp staining in paving along a likely pipe route
  • 04Water appearing at a boundary wall or lower terrace
  • 05Reduced pressure across the whole property

Please do not

  • 01Excavate, lift paving or dig along a suspected route on our suggestion
  • 02Open, adjust or tamper with the utility meter, seals or public side
  • 03Open electrical panels or disturb buried cables near pump rooms or lighting

What investigation may and may not do

Long buried runs are where careful investigation can be most useful, because opening a driveway on a guess is expensive. Even so, ground conditions, depth, materials and unknown routes affect what is possible. Further investigation, access and some excavation may still be needed, and nothing about the outcome is guaranteed.

If you have old plans, a rough idea of where the pipe enters the house, or know when the landscaping was last changed, mention it. It helps decide whether the enquiry is suitable.
